Nice two router configuration for home network

I got this from The Linksys Forums

You have one router running in your network. This router connects to the internet. Now you want to hook up a second router (e.g. a wireless router to have wireless access) in your network connecting both with an ethernet cable. The following is in most cases the best approach for home networks. You'll find similar answers with some screenshots in the Linksys Easy Answers, e.g. 4579

The setup:

1. Unplug the second router from anything. Connect a single computer to the router. Do not connect the second router to the first at the moment!

2. Configure the router at http://192.168.1.1/

3. Change the LAN IP address of the second router from 192.168.1.1 to a free address in your LAN (e.g. 192.168.1.2 should be O.K. if the first router is also a Linksys router). The address you change to (192.168.1.2) must not be used by any other device with static IP address in your network nor should be assigned by the DHCP server your network. A default Linksys router uses 192.168.1.1 itself and the DHCP server assigns 192.168.1.100-149.

4. Turn off the DHCP server on the second router.

5. Save the setting.

6. Unplug the computer from the second router.

7. Connect an ethernet cable from a numbered LAN port of the first router to a numbered LAN port of the second router. Do not use the Internet/WAN port on the second router!...

Comfy Work Spot

So Emily, Etta, and I took a nice little trip down to Hendersonville/Asheville, NC for the week. It is sort of an experiment to see what it is like to have a normal work week in a different location from home. We have been planning on spending some time with our friends down here and we finally had enough by the end of the holidays and after a couple cancelled trips on our behalf, and we decided to take the plunge!

We left Saturday afternoon and stopped half-way in a city just south of Cincinnati on the Kentucky side of the border, it was a great little town that has a nice 'Main Street' strip filled with German restaurants and pubs, we stayed at the Marriott Courtyard for the night and grabbed Waffle House the next morning on our way out. Needless to say this was the perfect second day start to a trip down south. Etta had her first experience at a Waffle House and she couldn't have been happier looking at all of the people, employees, and longing for her side of zasage (sausage.)

Now we are in Hendersonville and I decided to work the later part of the day at a fine little Irish pub in downtown Hendersonville, it's called Hannah Flannigan's. I found a spot on the non-smoking side by the window where the afternoon sun is shining in on what would otherwise be a couple coffee shop living room chairs, I have my pint of Bass Ale, my laptop, free WiFi, and I'm getting work done! This is the best off-site spot I think I've ever worked at....

Lease has been signed!

So we just had the lease signed for our house, this means we get to move into a bigger place where I can have an office again and Etta can move around and play with her toys in a fun, dedicated area!

We found a house in Ferndale that looks like the one and we will most likely sign on that tomorrow too... everything is moving so fast!

Etta is walking!

So this past weekend (Labor Day) marks the first time Etta really started walking on her own.

Now she just wants to stand up, try walking, plops down on her butt, then gets right back up and tries to walk again. Our 668 square foot house is a little small for her to make any real strides, but luckily we have somebody coming over tomorrow to sign a lease on our house and the three of us are going to be looking for a bigger place now! The crazy part is that we have to be out of our house in 3 weeks!!!! news item »
